Ethnic Communities

Posted in About

Contemporary Catholic life in Australia is enriched with the presence of people from a diverse range of ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. There are also Catholics who are not of the Roman Rite in our midst: Maronite, Melkite, Syro-Malabar. Since World War II the large Anglo-Celtic Australian church was enriched by people from Europe. Today, more than fifty years since the post-war migration boom there are still many communities which celebrate the Mass in their respective mother tongues. Most of these communities still have their own chaplains.

The Italian, Vietnamese, Polish, Dutch, and Spanish-speaking communities celebrate Mass using our parish facilities.

They are welcome and they will continue to be welcome; they are a vibrant part of our diverse communities. More recently, other groups have come to our shores to make Australia home. The Filipino, Tongan and Malayalam communities are vibrant in our local area. We share with them our facilities and pray that they feel “at home” with us.
