For many years, Catholics in the suburbs of Gwynneville and Keiraville walked to Saint Francis Xavier Church for Sunday Mass. In the 1930s a bus organised by a local parishioner brought the locals to and from the church in Wollongong. Then, in the 1940s Mass was celebrated in the Gipps Road School of Arts. In 1948 a new parish was formed under the patronage of Saint Brigid. The new church was blessed and opened in 1951.

The parish of Saint Brigid, Gwynneville was formed in 1948. It emerged out of post-World War II migration from Europe. It continues to be a vibrant parish with many young families
Saint Brigid of Kildare is one of the two patrons of Ireland. She is abbess and founded a number of convents. Her feast day is 1st February.
